Mini Poem #9 - Summer Hue Bliss
What I thought would be every Monday for only a few weeks has turned into 9! I hope you're enjoying these mini poems I've typed up from my notebook.
Summer Hue Bliss
She slipped off her shoes
And dipped in her feet
Into the ancient fountain
But it wasn’t seen
Only the evidence of pitter-patter footprints
To where she was seated
On the marble steps
Long dress on
Shoes at her side
Accompanied by a glass of rose wine
And two candle tealights
The golden colours of the sunset
Lighting her up in soft summer hues
With shadows growing longer
And the evening creeping in
Not a care in the world
That is how to live
A clear knowledge of
How to spend her time
Curly hair tied-up
Tumbling down her shoulders
A face showing time and
Wisdom of the good things in life.
I have to say this was one of my most treasured memories from a trip I made to Rome last summer, 2023. The very specific warm orange colours of the sunset and this woman who had set up shop on some steps we walked down.
I wanted so much to take a photo or sit down next to her to take in this wonderful moment she’d curated, but I didn’t want to break the magic or interrupt her ritual.
A part of me fell in love with that woman, it gave me hope of beauty when I’m long into my years and age has silvered my hair. But I wonder if I fell in love with her or a want, to be as brazen as her. She gave no shits about the streams of people passing by. She was enjoying a glass of wine with the bottle declaring she was going to be there a while, right in the middle of a busy fairway. She’d even come prepared with two tealights, lit next to her.
I’m desperately curious about how this idea came about, does she do it often or did she just spur of the moment set off that day? Either way, her sitting there enjoying life has certainly made an impression on me and will be a memory I hope to carry for the rest of my life.
