Mini Poem #12 - Hope is a Dangerous Thing
This week's poem is not from the little book, but directly from my heart, as I woke up this morning it came to me.
Hope is a Dangerous Thing
Hope leads you along a path
Lighting your way
Leading you in the direction you chose
The hope filling your heart
Filling your soul, encouraging you on
One foot in front of the other
Until one day the light of hope stops
You are left in the dark
Lost
Each way you look is unlit
There is no hope to guide you
No hope to show you the forward
No hope to take you back to where you started
The place you began no longer existing
Hope has left you stranded
In the middle of the dark
Without a sign to guide you
With hope extinguished, as too is the destination
Engulfed by the lack of light
Vanished like the start line
Left in a limbo, a void, an unknowing
If you hadn’t followed the hope
You would still be at home
Warmed by the glow of safety
But sat wondering what if
Hope is a dangerous thing
It leaves you questioning
Which would have been worse?
Hopelessness
Its pain
Its emptiness
Or the never-knowing
Where hope would have taken you
The possibility of what could’ve been
What is your relationship with hope? Have you found that hope has lead you to dark places or has it always been a guiding light? I’d love to talk hope with you in the comments.
I battled for many years with infertility, and this poem is written after this period ended brutally by hearing my biggest fear. I’m left flailing in this hopeless void I write of, in a period of grief, as to what to do with all this want and love for a life that can never exist.
If you connect with my writing or have experienced what I have gone through, please reach out either in the comments or via email at sheilaiswriting@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you. I want you to know, you’re not alone.

Love this reply! I love your journey with hope. Your belief is admirable. Your mental strength amazing. Your ability to forge your way out of frightful situations incredible. Your determination is contagious! 😘💚
Wowzers. I love to read/hear of the relationship we each have with hope. That, and the part it plays in the journey into the unknown that so many of us are on.
For me, at one time it felt like all I had was hope. And it felt like I was setting off into the unknown, having had made my choice and big scary decision, with me and this big back of hope slung across my shoulder on a stick.
It was only when I came to look back I see I had so much more than hope. I had belief, mental strength and the ability to create my way out of the frightful situation I found myself in. I had no inkling or idea of what the future held or of any difference it would make. But, still, I set off into the unknown all alone. With my superpower, determination as my ally. Even though at one time I’d even turned against that.
